Profiles on local schools
Glenmore Christian Academy is a JK to Grade 9 faith-based private school located on a state-of-the-art, 10-acre campus in the southwest of Calgary.
Our mission is to teach truth, inspire excellence, experience Christ, and serve through love. GCA is a school that nurtures the educational development and Christian discipleship of its students while working in partnership with parents.
Founded by First Alliance Church in 1980, GCA offers a strong, innovative accredited education within an interdenominational Christian tradition. The 900+ students agree to uphold GCA’s faith-based perspective, yet are representative of society, coming from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Students at GCA achieve the expectation for excellence on provincial achievement tests as well as during daily activities.
Exposure to specialist teachers begins in Kindergarten. Alongside core subjects, students have the opportunity to specialize in band, drama, art, outdoor education or TDI (Technology, Design and Innovation).
A second-language course is required in Junior High, with the choice of either Spanish or French. From this solid foundation, students are invited to participate in a number of extra-curricular activities including intramurals, choristers, band, and theatre productions.
Our GCA Royals’ athletic teams participate in basketball, volleyball, badminton and track & field.

How do you learn best? That was a question put to a group of students in grades 9 to 12 at Calgary Christian School. Through a series of dialogues and research the nine students crafted their ideal learning environment. Included were lots of natural light, welcoming environments, intuitive navigation, spaces for group activities, and quiet corners for reflection. Students also sampled classroom furniture at RGO, investigated modular interior construction at DIRTT, and toured newly constructed schools. Their ideas – along with those of their teachers – are now being reviewed by the school’s architects, Sahuri + Partners, who are tasked with shaping these concepts into an addition to the 26th Avenue SW facility.
“We’ll take the next few months to refine the plan,” said Ken DeWyn, executive director, “and after a round of revisions with stakeholders, we hope to reveal the concept design at the May meeting for our society members.”

Chinook Winds Adventist Academy (CWAA) is one of Calgary’s best-kept secrets! For the past 70 years, CWAA has served the Calgary area with Christian education, beginning in the basement of a church in 1945 and then moving to 20 beautiful wooded acres nestled in the hills between Canada Olympic Park and Crestmont community.
Since that time, CWAA has been immensely blessed with faithful parent, teacher and church partnerships. We are proud to be an independent school operated by the Seventh-day Adventist churches in Calgary, employing over 25 dedicated teachers and support staff. Our students are educated in our spacious and bright classrooms, gymnasium, music room, science lab, kitchen, computer lab, work-out space, soccer fields, elementary playground, and much more.
At CWAA we strive to achieve our mission by providing our students with a holistic education where they will grow mentally, socially, physically and emotionally. By creating a nurturing environment and setting high expectations, we strive to enable students to achieve their personal best. Additionally, we are committed to developing enthusiastic, engaged and motivated learners who are confident in Jesus Christ. “It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for” (The Message Bible, Ephesians 1:11). Our mission is to “engage students to follow God completely, serve unselfishly and achieve excellence”.

Heritage Christian Academy (HCA) is a K-12 school located in northeast Calgary and operating as a Faith-based Alternative Program in partnership with Palliser Regional Schools. The 2018/19 school theme at HCA is ‘Deeper’ which is challenging and encouraging students and staff to ‘go deeper’ in our understanding of God, in our love for Jesus, and in our relationship with each other. We are being immersed in God’s truth and are going deeper into God’s word through weekly chapels, daily devotions, and ongoing opportunities to serve and minister to those around us. God is moving, and we are eager and excited to follow His leading and direction for our school community!
At HCA, we love to develop student leadership! Sr. High discipleship groups encourage students to discuss current events and concerns with their peers in the context of their faith and the Bible. Students volunteer and coordinate activities that help build community through classrooms initiatives, student council, leadership and discipleship programs. Elementary leadership is developed through public speaking and support for events like parent/teacher interviews and concerts. Upper-elementary students volunteer with the ‘Playground Peace Patrol’, which encourages students to mediate and problem solve with their younger peers during recess.
Whether students are learning in the classroom, leading worship, playing sports, making music, going on mission trips, or just hanging out in the hallways, they are being equipped to serve and lead with Christ-likeness and godly character. “And so, God willing, we will move forward to further [deeper] understanding.” Hebrews 6:3.
