Seeing Jesus from the East

by Ravi Zacharias & Abdu Murray

Zondervan

Encounter Jesus Like Never Before through Eastern Eyes

Throughout these pages, Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray invite readers to rediscover the cultural insights we often miss when we ignore the Eastern context of the Bible. They offer a refreshing picture of Jesus, one that appeals to Eastern readers and can penetrate the hearts and imaginations of postmodern Westerners.

In Seeing Jesus from the East, Ravi Zacharias and Abdu Murray show us why a broader view of Jesus is needed – one that recognizes the uniquely Eastern ways of thinking and communicating found in the pages of the Bible. Zacharias and Murray capture a revitalized gospel message, presenting it through this Eastern lens and revealing its power afresh to Western hearts and minds.

Incorporating story, vivid imagery, and the concepts of honour and shame, sacrifice, and rewards, Seeing Jesus from the East calls believers and skeptics, both Eastern and Western, to a fresh encounter with the living and boundless Jesus.

Follow Him: A 35-Day Call to Live for Christ No Matter the Cost

by David Platt

Tyndale Momentum

In the first devotional from David Platt, Follow Him equips and empowers you to bring people to know Jesus Christ through your life.To be a disciple of Jesus is to make disciples of Jesus. This has been true since the first century, when Jesus invited four men to follow him. More than searching for fish all over the Sea of Galilee, these men would spread the gospel all over the world. They would give their lives by not simply being disciples of Jesus, but by sacrificially making disciples of Jesus. And God’s design for twenty-first-century disciples is the same.

Becoming a Christian involves responding to the gracious invitation of God in Christ. As we follow Christ, he transforms our will, mind, desires, relationships, and our ultimate reason for living. Every disciple of Jesus exists to make disciples of Jesus, here and among every people group on the planet.

Bestselling author and Bible teacher David Platt invites you to take a closer look over the next thirty-five days at what it means to be a true disciple; to become a fisher of men; and to give up your life, take up your cross, and Follow Him.

Dutch Blitz

original edition (green)

In Dutch Blitz, each player has her own deck of forty cards, with cards 1-10 in four colors; red and blue cards show a Pennsylvania Dutch boy, while yellow and green cards show a Pennsylvania Dutch girl. Each deck has a different symbol on the back to aid with card sorting between rounds.

At the start of each round, each player lays out three cards face up in front of her to create her post piles; places a face-up stack of ten cards, seeing only the top card, next to her post piles to create her blitz pile ; and holds the remaining cards in hand face down.

Playing at the same time, each player tries to empty her blitz pile. If she has a 1 on the top of any face-up stack, she plays it to the center of the table to create a Dutch pile. If she has a 2 of the same color as any 1 on top of a Dutch pile, she can place the 2 on the 1. All cards on a Dutch pile must be played in ascending order and must be the same color. A player can also play from the blitz pile onto a post pile, or from one post pile onto another, but only if the numbers are in descending order and the boys and girls alternate.

If a player can’t play anything, she can reveal cards from the stack in her hand, counting them out in groups of three, then laying them face up while revealing only the top card. She can play this top card onto a Dutch pile or post pile as long as she meets the rules for doing so.

As soon as a player empties her blitz pile, the round ends. Each player scores 1 point for each of her cards among the Dutch piles, then loses 2 points for each card remaining in her blitz pile. Players then sort all the cards and play another round. As soon as at least one player has at least 75 points, the game ends and the player with the most points wins.

When Your Husband is Addicted to Pornography

by Vicki Tiede

New Growth Press

After the Shock – Moving from Despair to Healing and Hope

The news was hard enough – the person closest to you in the world, your life partner, is struggling with pornography. But now, although the shock might have worn off, you are still reeling – feeling shattered, betrayed, alone. Where do you turn? Who do you turn to? Vicki Tiede, writing from personal experience, reminds you that no matter how you are feeling right now, you are not alone. You can turn to the God of all comfort and hope who promises to never leave you or forsake you.

When Your Husband Is Addicted to Pornography: Healing Your Wounded Heart is written to help you turn to God and away from despair. Healing comes as you learn to focus your eyes on Jesus and allow him to meet your needs rather than basing your hope and happiness on your husband’s choices. Vicki Tiede guides you through this process by focusing on six important topics: hope, surrender, trust, identity, brokenness, and forgiveness. Allowing God to meet your greatest needs is a long and learned process, but He promises to help you every step of the way.

Blessing or Curse

by Derek Prince

Chosen Books

Life’s trials and triumphs can seem accidental. One person may feel that life is a constant struggle in which pitfalls abound and someone seems out to get him. Another may feel that every day is a gift from God with special blessings just for her. That’s because forces are at work in our lives: the blessings of a loving God or the curses of our spiritual adversary.

This hugely popular classic work of Derek Prince helps readers recognize if there are curses at work in their lives and shows them how to get out from under those curses, to live under God’s blessings.

Finding Truth

By Nancy Pearcey

David C. Cook Publishers

Don’t think, Just believe? That’s the mantra in many circles today – whether the church, the classroom, the campus, or the voting booth.

The Jesus I Never Knew
by Philip Yancey

Zondervan

What happens when a respected Christian journalist decides to put his preconceptions aside and take a long look at the Jesus described in the Gospels? How does the Jesus of the New Testament compare to the ”new, rediscovered’ Jesus — or even the Jesus we think we know so well? Best-selling author Phillip Yancey says, ‘The Jesus I got to know in writing this book is very different from the Jesus I learned about in Sunday school. In some ways he is more comforting; in some ways more terrifying.’ Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work — his teaching, his miracles, his death and resurrection — and ultimately, who he was and why he came. Relating the gospel events to the world we live in today. The Jesus I Never Knew gives a moving and refreshing portrait of the central figure of history. With a willingness to tackle difficult questions, Yancey looks at the radical words of this itinerant Jewish carpenter and asks whether we are taking him seriously enough in our own day and age. From the manger in Bethlehem to the cross in Jerusalem, Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to radically transform your life and stretch your faith. The Jesus I Never Knew uncovers a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying. This honest book will help you discover a different Jesus from the flannelgraph Sunday school figure, the sweetly smiling Victorian Savior, and all the cultural cliches that have tamed Jesus and kept him in comfortable religious boxes. According to Yancey, ‘No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same. In the end I found the process of writing this book to be a great act of faith-strengthening. Jesus has rocked my own preconceptions and has made me ask hard questions about why those of us who bear his name don’t do a better job of following him.’

66 Love Letters

by Dr. Larry Crabb

Thomas Nelson

Have you ever read the Bible only to come away confused? Ever wondered if God actually had you in mind when He began telling His story?

Though life may not be going according to your plan, God has another one, far better than you can imagine. From Genesis to Revelation, experience His invitation to get you dancing with joy.

In 66 Love Letters Larry Crabb offers a fresh, relational look at Scripture:

“When you finish reading my first love letter to you, I want you to realize that I never underestimated how thoroughly you’d mess up your life or how painfully you would struggle and suffer, and I don’t want you to underestimate your failures or struggles either. They’re all part of the story I’m telling. “But neither have I underestimated my determination or ability to enter both the mess you’ve made and the pain you feel, then turn everything around. I can, and I will, make everything good again. Never underestimate me.”

Larry’s intimate conversation with God asks deeply honest questions such as:

  • “God, what is it you wanted me to see in Obadiah?”
  •  “And what’s up with Leviticus? Is there anything there for me?”
  •  “This one verse in Galatians has always frustrated me. Why is that?”
  •  “The way you wrote Revelation makes it difficult to understand―why didn’t you just describe what will happen in a straightforward way?”

Listen to the story of God unfold through these chapters, and you’ll fi nd not only His redeeming love but His plan and provision designed especially for you.
